The installation character of Schmit‘s work is shown in a special way on his "German House". From a distance it looks like an abandoned tool shed in an old industrial context . Or more like a typical German garden shed? Because it obviously has a hearth:This is indicated by a giant chimney. There is a large sign at the entrance: "Smoke and mirrors" is written there in fracture. This is initially quite literally to take, because in this house functions have preserved, that are not to suspect from afar. It smokes intermittently from the chimney, the side door opens squeakily and a potbellied stove comes out slowly. From the open rear side one can see that house and oven have entered into a symbiosis: The house as a protective cover of the furnace and the furnace as the most important object in the house. Nothing further, reduction to the core: fire, warmth, coziness are obtained in a shelter, which opens from time to time, so that a little is carried out into the world. But everything remains figuratively "smoke and mirrors" - illusions that are dangled before us, and that we are also deceiving ourselves: ideas of a perfect world - captured and repeatedly put outward. Maintaining the illusion does not leave any room for us, the house is occupied. Under severe conditions however, one could squeeze in, the space of illusions would become a survival space.
