Marilyn Monroe Installation

This is part of my collection of the 20th century icons using my technique: lacquered metallic nails on a painted wooden plate. The nails were manually installed one by one. There is about 4200 nails on this piece. I can replicate this technique using a photo portrait of anyone. Marilyn is here because she is, more than something else, an icon. Or, in my opinion, the icon. I must confess that I know very little about her. I know that she was an actress who sings in movies. Period. I have never watched a single movie of her. I’ve just seen some excerpts. I won’t recognize her voice. I’m not even curious to google about her life or work. I don’t care. But there is something on her that always have thrilled me. Maybe the way she looks, maybe her beauty, maybe her sensuality. I don’t even know what specifically makes her getting my attention. But what I’m sure, is whatever it is, she doesn’t let me indifferent. A sort of magnet of undefined source. This is what makes she the icon in my eyes. I don’t know what she did, but I’m sure, just by watching her very little, that she was unequivocally unique.
