About The Artwork

The cumulation of these three engaging, sculptural display units alongisde looped and edited video footage are exhibited in an aim to investigate the viewing of moving image within the artist’s world. Key components of the work include the positioning of the display unit, with technology being in the forefront, presence within the space it evolves in, and the way that the viewer is subconsciously led to navigate around it, including the comparison between an open space and an intimate space. The factors considered are more than just visual narrative, sound is used as a further layer of understanding. On screen; the visual material stands secondary to the way that the work takes inhabitancy. The eye catching movement and direct sound combine together as primary tools to coax viewers around the work. Significant time has been taken to select the outcome, from the progression of producing a singular piece of work to a group of ‘characters’ in this current series, showcasing a broad range of stereotypes portraying various contrasting emotions. Small specific details such as the accent colours on each screen marry together to produce the RGB colour model, the additive primary colours come from the first techniques used to broadcast colour television. This coupled with some of the three dimensional shapes creates a nostalgic memory of television, film and theatre without being a replica. Investigation into satisfaction of the viewer has been critical; however it has not always been paramount for the feedback to be positive. Exasperation is sometimes welcomed as technology has this effect on people in everyday life; the work echoes the varying emotions which watching can produce. Irritation and annoyance are not ignored when reviewing the positive satisfaction and pleasures gained by observing moving image. John Berger’s theoretical view on seeing, and being “bombarded by imagery” in addition to Nam June Paik’s artistic description of, “a media saturated culture” is something I transfer from still to moving imagery. Paik has had an impact on the work, guiding the use of the TV screen as a physical form of language, translating to our current obsessed culture which people can instantly identify and connect with. This is demonstrated by current events such as the Turner Prize, which is presenting three out of four shortlisted artists using digital technology and video to display parts, or all of their work. A short listed contender; James Richards, whose work focuses on using video and installation, creates reflections on the act of looking and pleasure in close proximity with the work displayed today. The atmosphere that surrounds this series of work shares alikeness with Pipilotti Rist’s sensual installations. A sense of expectation and investigative nature unfold in both scenarios. Pierre Huyghe is another example of how use of space can affect the work immensely. He has utilized existing exhibitions and transformed them into something of his own, engaging and also reinventing the old. With technology at the direct attention of this display, sound plays an intrusive role in the gallery setting. Conspicuous voices are in an abstract conversation throughout the piece. Allowing the viewer to gather information from the three pieces and conclude their own interpretations; somewhere between the ‘white cube’ of a gallery, and the ‘black box’ of a cinema setting.
