Quantum Questions: Particle/Wave Duality Installation

This piece is unique and engages the viewers—the colours and forms they see depends on their viewing point and shifts as they move around the piece. When seen square-on, the piece appears to be black and white—vertical hand-drawn black ink lines are disrupted by the transparent film and there is only a hint of colour. When seen from the side, a multitude of colours are revealed, their shapes morphing and changing as the viewer moves position. There is no actual painted colour in the piece, however, colours are seen as they are created by polarising the light that shines through from the LED panel behind. Mirrors suggest that the work extends beyond its own boundaries towards infinity. This piece is inspired by my PhD research. I explore the phenomena of light and matter, specifically investigating ideas of wave/particle duality. I am inspired by physicists Louis de Broglie and David Bohm who posed that, at the quantum level, matter exists as both particles and waves. Waves and particles are a recurring motif in my work and are referenced in this art piece. The artwork is housed in a black wooden box frame. It has a proprietary LED light panel with a dimmable LED driver and switch (115-240 V ac). Flat panel wall fixings are included.
