About The Artwork

Under the alias of his alter ego Simon, Josh creates mixed media installations, sourcing a wide variety of materials which work both in harmony and in contrasting play with one another. The aim of this fictitious character, an obsessive compulsive recluse, is to share with others his view of an altogether different plain of experience. There is a performative element to Simon's creation TURMERIC CASTLE as the physical presence of the work is both site specific and yet also self destructive. Hanging organic forms ooze oils and dyes which stain and transform all surfaces in their path. The audience, when viewing the work, are thrust into the space, and led through it by the cantankerous character of Simon. The installation becomes a set and the audience, who wear masks, become characters in this bizarre luna landscape. The audience stands to attention and watches as Simon reads out a body of text which bestows a potential narrative to the scene. The final act that is performed onto the space is the firing of a giant air cannon. This act transforms the etherial pile of feathers sitting in the firing line from being an inanimate prop into individual characters moving through the space. However this climactic act also transforms the space as a whole, which is changed irreversibly into that of a winter snowstorm.

The aim of my practice is the creation of immersive installations. A wide verity of media are utilised and materials are applied in a process similar to that of painting. I am interested in theatre and live performance. I use sets, costumes and props, alongside the act of reading set narratives through text to cast the audience of my work as characters within a story. My work is site specific and self destructive. I utilise kinetic structures and lighting effects to bring a space to life. The influences on my practice have found there way, soured from a variety of regions. Those may be that be of the work of Amish Kapoor, Wolfgang Laib and Ernesto neto, or from biology and theatre.
