About The Artwork

Petra Höcker is a painter and illustrator from the outset. However, her paintings have always had a strong material aspect, so only it was consequent that she has expanded her work more and more in the direction of room installations in recent years. Höcker thinks primarily of the color and the material properties, whereby transparency plays a very important role. This artist does know very well how to deal with materials. Whether natural materials such as hemp, linen, gauze, linseed oil or even hair or artificial materials such as latex, foam, Plexiglas, glue, metal - it is above all the expressive impression of the materials acting on the body feeling. Body and physicality, the self-awareness of the body as a contact point between the self and the world, the peculiar and enigmatic fact that we as human beings not only have a body but are able to understand and control the processes within our inner condition only conditionally. All this together with the paradoxes and irritations that result from it, forms the thematic basis for the work of Petra Höcker. Likewise, one could speak of Petra Höcker's objects, especially of their "organs", that the human body feels in this way, if it could take a visible form. Their yellow organ-like objects of wounded fabric with their bloodstained seams point to the whole ambivalence of the organic between autonomous vitality and extreme vulnerability. Papadopoulos and Höcker are not artists who can rationalize their work with reason and communicate with them certain messages. On the contrary, they can be counted among the artists who perform their work mainly to find out why they make these works of art. This paradoxical, circular self-foundation of art-creation is a tremendously powerful source of force, because art cannot spring from calculus, but from existential necessity. The artistic process is directly connected with the great totality of human existence, together with all its riddles and abysses. As a viewer, one can easily get into this self-founding circle because one understands the fascination and the value of art much better by looking continuously at art.
