About The Artwork
The Relief or Installation refers to the attire that the Slave Girl, Ann Maria Weems, may have worn to escaper her captors. Research at the Montgomery County Historical Society in Rockville,MD, (Residency) led to a series of works that addressed the lives of the African American Community who lived in the County at the time. The Historical Society was the home of the former slaves owners (Beall-Dawson). The work is textiles based using digital technology to manipulate the image. The design is collaged, stitched etc. The accessories are antique i.e. the new with the old and is a wall piece (Relief). Ann Maria Weems dressed as a man (disguise) to escape her captors in the mid 1800s.

1944.Nairobi,Kenya. Most of my life has been spent in the UK and USA where I was also educated and have made my home. Travel has played an important part of my life and work. The work is influenced by place, time and memory. The artwork is textile based in which stitchery,collage and stitch is used in conjunction with digital photography. Recent work is in collaboration with a Poet in which the text is layered with stitch to add density of surface. These works are executed on handmade felt.
