ABOUT THE ARTWORK

What you buy: "All beauty is formed under the eye of God" It must be stressed that what the buyer purchases in not a paper print. The work is printed using the highest quality available printing machines of the latest technology which use a 12 to 16 colour matrix The Artist employs a number of Museum Quality printers in various locations, both here in the US and overseas, in order speed the work to the buyer. More importantly, the Artist works with each Printer to achieve retain and enhance the integrity of the work. The result is a presentation which more than justifies the price. A work is always printed on a carefully chosen medium in key with and printed on a medium in key with the this case, the work will be printed on a Museum Quality Hahnemühle medium and mounted. The mount is of a superior and highly durable Archival quality material. The print is run to the bottom edge of the mount in order to present a work which retains its integrity should the work not be suitable for framing. Framing - at buyers discretion "All beauty is formed under the eye of God" can support a frame should the buyer choose to do so but this is discretionary. Should the buyer wish for the work to be framed before shipping, the Artist can work with a World Class Framer. The buyer needs be aware that this will add considerably to the cost and will take time. However, the results will merit the effort involved. Background There is long tradition in the Islamic World of beautiful and exquisitely executed painted scripts which have no equal. Medieval manuscripts are their closest contemporary. But, other than the likes those created for Le Duc de Berry, the Medieval works are, by and large, inept and clumsy. The script is clumsy and rigid, although in later times it improves. A better comparison would be with the Book Of Kells which is surely The Venus de Milo of that time. What distinguishes the Persian tradition is that each letter is treated in turn as an art form whereas in the Western Tradition the script is uniform. The artist has sought from the beginning to find a way of bringing the wonderful traditions of the past into the present and present them in a contemporary way that speaks to our time but contains within those works a resonance with the past. Inspiration While completing another work which employs numerals, the obvious connection was made that the numerals we use throughout almost the entire world are Arabic in origin. Paradoxically, the Arabs have a numeral script of their own, though rarely seen in the outside world. Description Besides the black border, a character from the font collection of Amin Sughayer, a well known font founder from Egypt is used as a backdrop. The name of the font is Aayat Quraan, meaning "Verses from the Koran" in English. The poem in Arabic forming the title is superimposed on the backdrop. "All beauty is formed under the eye of God," is original to the Artist and has no known source.

It is possible, though not proven, that abilities of whatever nature, come from our genes, passed on by parents. In my case, my mother. My mother dripped art. Her sister, whom I never met, was a concert pianist though both brothers were engineers as was their father. My mother lived entirely in the arts world and I grew up in Edinburgh surrounded by artists of all nationalities. I remember visiting one, a painter. Long after my mother had left us, my two brothers and I visited an artist friend of hers. He was as poor as were we and he gave us bread slices covered in sugar. My father, an intellectual and self appointed scholar, had chosen not to work; defeated by the breakdown of his marriage. We went overnight from among the very wealthy in the city into genteel poverty since he had lost his job with the Royal Society of Edinburgh as a result of his withdrawal from the outside world. This was a peculiar upbringing. What it meant for me is that I could not do anything but choose a career which guaranteed security of employment and income throughout my life. A natural choice was engineering. I spent my life in this career for which I was quite unsuited and quite alien to me but I was good at it, I am tempted to say, very, very good, unfortunately. Now I have reached a point, with that career behind me, where I can pursue what I love and am good at. Well, better at. All those years, in every waken hour outside of the demands of the intensity which engineering requires, were spent pursing knowledge and practice of arts; art, literature, theatre and music. At college I hung around with the artists. My fellow engineering students seemed alien beings to me. I was fortunate indeed to grow up in Edinburgh and one could not wish for a fuller cultural environment. Since my mother was an artist, I was exposed early to the creation of art, both hers and that of her artist friends. Before coming to this country to join family, I lived in South Africa for a period of years, which has influenced me in ways that are not readily apparent in any of my art works. I think the profundity of influence is due to the particular light that fills the landscapes of that part of the world and the people. There is, too, a deeply felt sense of being connected to the world and to the soil upon which we stand and live. I suspect that the political situation of the time made me aware of power abused to subjugate others and to deny them their freedom.
