ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Sven Jakubith’s Journeys Beyond Horizons invites viewers to embark on a visual exploration of the Pacific, capturing the sense of freedom, adventure, and intimacy that emerges from life at sea. Using a blend of personal photographs from his sailboat travels, Jakubith masterfully transforms these moments into complex digital collages, reminiscent of traditional silkscreen prints. His unique process of layering and recomposing the imagery evokes the feeling of movement, fluidity, and the ever-changing nature of the ocean. Each piece in this collection balances between reality and abstraction, capturing both the immediacy of lived experience and the dreamlike quality of distant horizons. The artist integrates elements of the natural world—rolling waves, wide expanses of sky, distant islands—with fragments of human presence, such as the ropes of the sailboat or the silhouette of a passing vessel. These compositions reflect the interconnectedness between the traveler and their surroundings, offering a contemplative space for viewers to ponder their own relationship to nature and exploration. The silkscreen-like texture of Jakubith’s digital prints creates a tactile, handmade quality, emphasizing the artist's interest in bridging the gap between traditional printmaking and digital innovation. This technique imbues the works with a sense of nostalgia, echoing the rich history of nautical exploration, while also situating them firmly in the present. Journeys Beyond Horizons is more than just a visual chronicle of Jakubith’s travels. It is a meditation on the unknown, a reminder of the allure of distant places, and a celebration of the boundless potential that lies beyond the horizon.

Born in Berlin, Sven Jakubith's life and art are shaped by a passion for exploration. His travels by bicycle have taken him across Southeast Asia—Vietnam, Laos, Burma, Cambodia, and Thailand—as well as New Zealand and Cuba. In 2015, he embarked on a solo sailing journey from Mallorca, Spain, to the Caribbean. The following year, after crossing the Panama Canal, he sailed single-handedly to French Polynesia—a 48-day voyage across the vast Pacific, where the endless horizon left a profound mark on him. After selling his boat in Tahiti, he purchased a larger vessel, ETHEREAL, in Barcelona in 2016, and set off again for the South Pacific. In 2018, while ETHEREAL waited in Panama, Sven re-established a studio in the Bavarian mountains, reconnecting with his art after a 15-year hiatus. His recent works, much like his older pieces, are centered on the theme of traces—both physical and immaterial. These traces reflect his travels: the footprints left on a beach, the wake carved in the Pacific Ocean. Using travel photography, silkscreen prints, and light-sensitive coatings, he captures these fleeting moments on canvas. His art is an exploration of memory and movement, expressed through vibrant colors, subtle shades, and layered compositions, all conveying the concept of "Distant Traces."
