Among my most recent work, I’m interpreting the contemporary Japanese visual landscape as I experienced it during a 2010 trip to Japan. That series is called “One Hundred Views of Japan,” a play on Hiroshige’s “One Hundred Famous Views of Edo.” I seek to convey the attention to detail and composition so evident in Japanese expression, whether in art, architecture, cuisine or visual communication. “One Hundred Views of Japan” is also a deeply personal exploration, as my trip represented a convergence of important elements. That nexus included a lifelong interest in things Japanese, a wondrous vacation with my wife at the time and an opportunity to spend a couple weeks with my best friend since early childhood. That trip would come to represent a high water mark ahead of what were to become more challenging times. Considered in retrospect, this may help to explain the combination of beauty, wonder, nostalgia and impermanence that appears to be emerging from the pieces in the series—something akin to the Brazilian concept of saudade.
