Phil Uhl is a multimedia marine artist with over five decades of experience capturing the beauty and excitement of the ocean and sailing. Born in Toledo, Ohio, and raised on the shores of Lake Erie, Uhl was the second of seven creative siblings. In 1970, after serving as a Domestic Peace Corp volunteer in Milwaukee, he purchased a one-way ticket to Hawaii, seeking warmer weather and new opportunities. Arriving in Waikiki in 1971 with $400, Uhl began painting again, having previously worked with oils and watercolors as a child. He took a part-time job at a local art gallery and sold his work at the Honolulu Zoo Fence. Despite numerous showings, he struggled to make a living in fine art and began teaching himself photography. By the late 1970s, his sailing photography landed him a non-paid consultant contract with Pan American Airways, promoting their new, Hawaii based, yacht racing event to the best sailors around the world. In the mid-1980s, Uhl expanded into video coverage of sailing events, co- founding Channel Sea Television with Leslie DeMeuse. 1n 1987, he worked with the Sail America Foundation and Dennis Conner's successful campaign to win back the America's Cup from Australia. For the 1992 America's Cup, he was with Bill Koch's victorious America 3 team. In 1995, His footage of the America 3 Women's Team documented a historic moment in the Cup's male dominated history. Phils most recent film project is the documentary, "MELGES, The Wizard of Zenda" (2023) which features his America's Cup footage and stills. Uhl / CSTV also produced the Television Coverage for the KENWOOD CUP SERIES and biannual Transpacific Yacht Races in the 80s and 90s. In 2007, he served as Coordinating Producer for the documentary "Morning Light," released by Walt Disney Company. A pioneer in digital art, in the early 90s, Uhl began experimenting with creating fine art original prints using Macintosh computers and high-resolution pigment printers. While primarily self-taught, Uhl studied Graphic Design at the Dayton Art Institute and Printmaking at the Art Students League in New York City. He has received numerous awards for his work, including an EMMY. His work is featured in public and private collections worldwide.
