ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Icelandic 60'' x 40'' Original matt resin artwork I dream of the world of prehistory, the lands of the dinosaurs and when the earth was young - before humans arrived. No where on planet earth has this like Iceland - it is like the beginning of time. Huge waterfalls cascading over vast lava cliffs, shallow seas washing up on black lava deserted me. This is no Benidorm - no one for miles around if at all. Vast river of icy blue and white powdery mineral soaked waters meandering across vast plains for hundreds of miles. The raw unspoilt newly created land - less than 10 million years old from the bottom of the North Atlantic Ridge where newly created magma rises up and built this fabulous place. I love purples, pinks, greys and whites and I built these colours of every shade int my artwork here and then built up the layers of matt resin adding really beautiful mineral pigments like mica, sand, diamond dust, silver, the most fabulous inks over a base of spray paints and oil layers as the first coat on the raw canvas. The final effect is of a matt resin, not shiny like what you normally see in resin products. This work draws you in, immerses you in the magic of a magical land. A time machine.

Growing up in a isolated farming community it was fascinating to see the relationship between humans and the landscape. the toiling of the earth and the relationship between water, ice ,heat ,erosion was all around me at a very simple level. The corrosion on the metals from relentless rain on the farm or the slices of rock I found in the valleys formed this obsession with Time as a great creator and destroyer. I had to put this down on paper, the shapes and colours all around. I invented new techniques of creating the textures and layers and the landscapes I loved so much on my travels as an adult. Taking the subject of landscape painting and abstract art and turning it on its head using burning, smashing, layering with raw materials from geology itself such as sand, salt, quartz, diamond dust, gold leaf, iron.crushed precious stones to create an effect of real geological processes. Recyled papers and shredded plastic pieces I find, recycled heated glass are new ways of using our excessive planetary waste to create something beautiful.
