This work is a part of the artist’s It’s All Derivative series, which comments on the practice of appropriation in the art world by combining borrowed imagery from the past with the antiquated visual language of Morse code. In creating this image, Claps pixelated a photograph of Amanda Lepore masquerading as Marilyn Monroe by David LaChapelle, which was a play on Warhol’s Marilyn series, over which the artist has superimposed coded dots and dashes that spell out the name of the series.
