ABOUT THE ARTWORK

A collection of two halves. I quite often start my abstract journey through collage and mixed media. This collection of split canvases plays with the concept of contrasts. Whilst photographing each place over 60 times i would not only capture the buildings , glass, reflections, the structure, the lines i would capture the people around it, the busy traffic the flow of foot fall, the energy the noise, the weather, the calm the chaos, the spaces. Each set of photos being pushed into its abstract form through collage and mixed media. As in many collections i like to show stark contrasts of what i see, so here i have done exactly this. I have shown a slight glimpse of the actual structure, the straight line the harsh angles the repetitive window with the chaos and dynamic hustle and bustle of city life surrounding it.

Michelle graduated from Central St Martins College of Art and Design with a degree in Textiles Design. Her speciality was print making. Hand painting her screens gave her work a loose painterly and expressive immediacy. After collage Michelle never left London. Working on feature films in costume departments for over ten years Michelle has now returned to her first love, painting and has set up her Art studio near her home with views of the Big City. Her work usually starts with a series of her own photographs which capture a Beauty and simplicity in the human world. She then distils the compositions down to a raw, abstract, engaging interpretation through mixed media, collage and paint. The simplicity of her aesthetic belies a rigorous and frenetic work ethic which prevents her from 'overthinking' and stifling her mark making.
