About The Artwork

My type of scanography is unique. It is a subcategory of artistic photography, I would call it "object scanography". This is because I destructively create three-dimensional objects from various materials, which are then transferred to the two-dimensional through scanography. I have been working with this particular imaging technique for over 20 years. The compositions consist of a wide variety of materials to visualize my theme "cocoon". In doing so, I raise the question of the shell and the external representation of the human being, which also always means a questioning of self-perception. In all this, the aesthetics is always in the foreground for me, not only to show the most beautiful shell, but also to give beauty to the greatest gray. Anke Schmich, art historian M.A., says this about "Cocoon": "... Among other things, the cocoon is to be understood as a symbolic body shell that metaphorically interprets the hollow space surrounding it as the space of an "inner world." Using the special technique of scanography, the artist stages artificial spaces with a wide variety of mostly round objects and materials that allow glimpses into the depths, either allowing glimpses into the pictorial space surrounding them or closed in the middle - but always actively emerging optically from the deep blackness of the background surrounding them. The staging of different surfaces has the effect of questioning common patterns of perception and meaning." Printed by WhiteWall on branded photo paper with rich color reproduction and guaranteed lightfastness. Bonding with permanently elastic silicone on 2 mm thick glossy acrylic glass. Stable back wall made of aluminum dibond. Protective back wall made of a 3 mm thick aluminum dibond layer. Back support made of circumferential aluminum rails. Elegant and simple. Hand signed, stamped and marked with the limited number on the back.

I have been working for a long time in the supposedly opposing fields of image and object. Leaving nothing out, allowing a lot is an important aspect of my way of thinking and working. Many things count for me, many things are important, set something in motion – or are perhaps simply beautiful. It doesn't matter if it's the 1x1m picture or a snapshot of my feet on a manhole cover. Aesthetics often lie in the very small things. Object scanography I like to combine image and object to something completely new and in these fusions I appreciate the tension of contradiction and also the unexpected, which makes the viewer wonder and raises questions. This is clearly shown in the Object scanography, because here I completely fuse the two controversial artistic areas of image and object: three-dimensional objects that I create from various materials are transferred into a two-dimensional photo by means of an old Agfa tube scanner from 1998. Printmaking & Drawing For the realisation of my typo-portraits I use my own texts and portraits. Sometimes these elements lie on several picture levels and thus take on an object-like character. I use self-created portrait photos and transform them graphically or by drawing. In the texts, I imagine fictitious moments and short scenes from the lives of these protagonists. None of this has anything to do with the person photographed. In the end, the typo-portraits are completely imagined personalities and their stories. Object Ceramics, object boxes – apart from the one-dimensional work with technical means, the antithesis is the haptic of the object. I particularly appreciate the straightforwardness of the clay, the honest earthiness is soothing. Photography Nothing is pictorial, why should it be? I look for the story in the pictures, sometimes in situations that arise and sometimes thought through.
