"Rare Woods" is inspired by the idea of layering areas of light and dark. Colours float over and under each other, offering the viewer a joyous yet meditative composition. Alex's richly-coloured, deeply-layered artworks are created with a variety of collage, painting and drawing techniques. His process begins using systems for making art that combine models of composition and colour (from art and design) with complex systems (from science and maths). As each piece develops, a more intuitive approach takes over and Alex allows the artwork to guide him what to do. Overarching everything is a conceptual approach to pattern, partly informed by his textile design training and also including design patterns (from software design) and pattern language (from architecture). His work is intimate and contemplative, slowly revealing itself over time. Alex was born in Dorset (UK). He lives in Manchester (UK).
