About The Artwork

"Refined" is an encaustic artwork that fuses the delicate and the industrial. Inspired by the dynamic between the human experience and the precision of a refinery, this black and white piece features a double image transfer, blending the silhouette of a contemplative female figure with the mechanical aesthetics of an industrial landscape. The closed eyes of the female subject draw viewers into a journey of introspection and self-refinement. With hands gently cradling the sides of her face, she becomes a conduit for the distillation of thoughts and emotions. The title "Refined" takes on a dual meaning, extending beyond the industrial context to symbolize the ongoing process of refining the mind and the essence of human existence. Encaustic, chosen for its layered and textured nature, adds a tactile dimension to the artwork, emphasizing the transformative journey depicted. "Refined" challenges its audience to consider the intricate relationship between external influences and internal evolution. Through this work, I strive to evoke a sense of mindfulness and self-discovery, encouraging viewers to reflect on their own refining processes in the continuous cycle of existence.

"My art is a combination of photography, encaustic, and painting. I transfer images directly into beeswax, and embellish with colored wax mediums I make from oil-based or powdered pigments. I enjoy the wide range of possibilities inherent in this technique - the evocative and distressed tones, and especially the additive and subtractive qualities that come along with the process. Through my art, I continue to express concepts of growth and awareness, and to promote the preservation of our external environment as well as the cultivation of our inner self."
