ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Riot at the Disco (2022-2023) is an ongoing series that embraces bold colours and big gestures. Conceived in 2022, COVID-19 was moving towards endemicity but there were still news of one wave and the other. It was unclear whether it was the beginning of the end or the end of the beginning. That uncertainty led to the conception of this series which screams c'est la vie. The uninhibited strokes of strong colours is a reminder that come what may, just seize the day and have fun anyway!

I am a contemporary artist known for my gestural abstract paintings. It was my fascination with colours and textures that led me to paint predominantly in abstracts. Under the tutelage of Choy Weng Yang at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, I learnt to engage viewers in a visual conversation with my works. I draw inspiration from the works of Gerhard Richter, Cy Twombly, Andy Warhol, Marcel Duchamp, Egon Schiele and many other artists before me. I strive to create a visual language that speaks to the universal human experience beyond the limitations of representation. My works are not meant to be a literal interpretation of reality, but rather an exploration of the interplay between color, form, and texture. My creative process is an intuitive and spontaneous journey that unfolds on the canvas, allowing me to tap into my subconscious and convey emotions that are often difficult to express in words. I believe that art has the power to transcend cultural and linguistic barriers, and that abstract art, in particular, has the ability to evoke deep and meaningful responses from viewers. My works are a reflection of my personal experiences and state of mind when painting that is open to interpretation by the viewers who bring their own perspectives and emotions to the table. In essence, my art is a visual representation of the ineffable, a reflection of the beauty and complexity of the human experience.
