Mophead “ Toochukwu Chukwubudom ” is a Nigerian multidisciplinary visual artist, born in Lagos state in the year 2000 to a dad who hails from Rivers state and a mum from Anambara state. His earliest recollection of making art was when as a child, he’d to love to go out to play after school, but whilst others played at other things, he’d use sticks and stones to make illustrations in the sand, usually trying to depict the buff men he saw on wrestling shows, and thus his journey began. From figures in the sand to drawing quirky fight scenes on paper and narrating the actions and dialogues to him self as he did, to meeting and picking up things from a friend or two during his sojourn in elementary school who were also art inclined, to his mother who is one of his earliest influences and supporters getting a tutor to teach him the fundamentals of drawing. It is hugely thanks to her that even through setbacks and numerous attempts to deter him, that he has blossomed into the artist he is today. Although Mophead would rather not be defined or confined to a single style, constant themes in his works include figuration, figurative abstraction, impressionism, realism and surrealism. He currently works using mediums ranging from oil paints, to pastels, to charcoal, graphite, to ballpoint pens, to textiles. And quite recently he’s added creating art digitally to his repertoire of skills, including but not limited to photography, poetry, fashion designing, video editing and so on. As exploration is an integral part of his practice, he is constantly looking to expand the horizon of mediums he’s in his employ, and finding creative ways to blend these mediums. For example, he’s only started to learn 2d animation for which he intends to breath life into his otherwise still paintings and bring a different dimension to them. Mophead believes that being an artist entails continually questioning the status quo, asking questions, changing and evolving, and setting a precedent for those who do not. He also believes that true art seeks to acknowledge, understand, love and be true to one’s self, and in turn, inspire others to do the same.
