About The Artwork

This work was inspired by the original photograph of Dora Maar. It is part of my series, Venus, that is a continuous exploration of womanhood and femininity. An exploration and confrontation with myself, with other women, our histories and lives. Society has always been trying to define how ideals should be manifested in reality and it rewards femininity in limited ways. “Women must be perfect (goddesses) or they’re failures (whores)." From goddesses, warriors and muses, to sinner, subordinate and hysterical, the concept of an ‘ideal woman’ has been constantly changing, yet remains an eternal struggle. As I create the Venuses using pieces of waste textiles, I sink into a profound confrontation with my broken parts, with pieces of my soul. These fragments have often been moved out of sight - either out of shame, self-doubt, or a sense of their insignificance. Through the act of stitching these disparate parts together, a transformative synergy emerges, birthing not merely artworks, but a process of healing. It is here where I find the essence of life, with stories and hidden scars. Women, we carry much, symbolic of our collective experiences. Yet, woven within this tapestry of existence lies the prospect of unification - a weaving together of fractured and severed fragments into a cohesive whole. Through this process, these shattered and amputated parts are transformed into a newfound form, one that embraces the entirety of our complexity and finds beauty in it. Just as the Venuses take shape from tattered remains, I endeavor to create a unified self from the remnants of our past, a testament to our resilience and the reclamation of our narratives.

Kopácsi works with textiles, creating sculptural pieces on canvas which give new life to found objects and waste materials, moving them beyond obsolescence. Her work explores the connections between what we create and carry with us and what we try to leave behind. Themes of this connectivity with one another and our environment emerge from within the work. She is captivated by the idea of life beyond the observable surface, and with how that life can be revealed. Through her work, she seeks to explore the metaphorical connections between materials and our shadow selves: the hidden, unacknowledged aspects of our psychology that we try to ignore or repress. Using the archetypal motif of sewing, representing both the creation of something new and the repair of something damaged or worn, she confronts the excess of contemporary society while celebrating our potential for transformation and renewal. She seeks to capture the essence of these intertwined concepts, exploring the tension between decadence and beauty, questioning the ideals that shape our perceptions and challenging preconceptions to create work that reflects the complexity of the human experience.
