ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Many people are under the impression that Seahorses do not exist. Not only do they exist, they are quite intelligent and often, even as babies, form synergistic relationships with much larger species. In this case, the baby seahorse has partnered with a Drillfish. Drillfish are extremely fast swimmers, due to their unique propulsion system, but despite their strong jaws and sharp teeth, they are vulnerable to predators attacking from the side due to a lack of peripheral vision. The baby seahorse serves as a lookout, fending off predators with its hammer. Both species benefit from this relationship, as the baby seahorse no longer needs to expend all its energy slowly swimming, and the Drillfish gains a lookout to warn of predators in its blind spot. In addition to being synergistic, a warm friendship has developed between the two, and they have become besties.

David Joseph is an artist, physician, engineer and inventor who lives on Martha’s Vineyard and in Naples, Florida. As an artist, David’s primary media are found object art and photography. An avid international traveler, he has visited over 120 countries on all seven continents, all 50 states, and over 250 UNESCO world heritage sites, each destination an opportunity to photograph nature, wildlife, and portraits. Unable to travel during Covid, David saw the potential to create art from the mundanity around him. He began to create found object sculptures made of old or used common household items, toys, and sports equipment. Each whimsical, thought-provoking piece displays the balanced composition of a trained artist and the skilled construction of an engineer.
