A Day at the Seaside Print - Limited Edition of 1

I created this group of people standing on a seawall, with a brisk yet comfortable summer sea breeze blowing in from one side. It is not actually a seawall, more of an estuary wall, as this is the final turn of the River Humber before it opoens out into the North Sea on the east coast of England. This is on the Lincolnshire side, a few miles downstream of the Humber Bridge, in an area of farmland and a kind of a natural park. When you are brought up close to the sea, its changing moods remain with you all your life. The colour reflects how deep or shallow the water is, whether the tide is in or out, whether there are rocks on the sea floor or, as here whether recent rain has loaded the rivers with silt and sediments, giving it that distinctive brownish hue, while further out it takes that moody blue. The sky is also important, with clouds adding a sombre mood or the sun twinkling as reflections on the tips of the moving waves. Here the waves are quite small, giving a feeling of tranquility, while at other times the sea thunders into the shore or breakwaters and sprays up white. The water is also a border: they do things different on the other side, and yet those living on the edge share something that people living further in land do not, and that is people are always crossing the borders, bringing ideas from distant places, and often stop long enough to share some of those ideas. We do not know what is happening across that water, it is not the same as watching someone across a plain or valley, as the water rises up like a hill between us and those on the other side. We cannot just walk or drive, to cross we have to take risks, because we cannot simply walk away if something goes wrong. This awareness of the near unknown remains just out of sight, in our not-quite-subconscious mind.
