About The Artwork

This piece is an appreciation for Nigerian culture and heritage specifically in the Yoruba culture. The fabric used to create 'facial features' is called adire - (Yoruba: tie and dye) textile indigo-dyed cloth made in southwestern Nigeria by Yoruba women, using a variety of resist-dyeing techniques. it is a representation the Yoruba people. Taking pieces of the fabric symbolises the way we sometimes dilute parts of ourselves to create a new version that we consider socially acceptable.
