A limited edition print, signed by the artist, created using archival inks on museum grade cotton photo rag paper. This work come from a study of organic natural forms and their relationship to simple mathematical rules. Influenced by the work of D'Arcy Thompson, Alan Turing and Ernst Haeckel, it studies how intricate forms of plant and coral like structures can be created by digital simulation of flow and deposition. It uses variations on an algorithm called Diffusion Limited Aggregation: a simple system of simulating growth by repeated deposition. The sculptural shapes are created by a process of accretion over time. They are gradually grown by simulating the paths of millions of particles randomly flowing in a field of forces. Over time they build on top of an initial simple seed surface to produce structures of immense complexity. The changes to the rules effectively represent modifications to environment that the form is growing in. Video of Aggregation forms growing: https://vimeo.com/83297099

Andy Lomas is a computational artist, mathematician and Emmy award winning supervisor of computer generated effects. His art work explores how complex sculptural forms can be created emergently by simulating growth processes. He is currently based in London, developing his art practice as well as working as a Teaching Fellow at The Bartlett School of Architecture and as a Visiting Research Fellow at Goldsmiths, University of London. In 2014 his work Cellular Forms won The Lumen Prize Gold Award
