About The Artwork

This artwork is part of a selection of images generated by a special version of "Diviso 4" based on 1024 x 1024 squares and with colors optimized for printing. "Diviso 4" (divided by 4) is a random generator of images created in 1988 for producing visual configurations with as much freedom as possible. The goal was to create very simple rules that were able to generate chromatic forms and combinations, different and unpredictable each time. A square is colored and randomly divided into four parts which can each undergo a color transformation: – acquisition of one of the adjacent colors; – random variation of the chromatic components; – chromatic inversion (complementary color). Further subdivisions and new color variations are applied to the four obtained squares, and this procedure continues until reaching single pixels. More info and interactive version of "Diviso 4" are available on the project page: https://www.livinbits.com/en/diviso4/

He began making the first experimentation with generative art in 1983 and earned a degree in painting at the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera in Milan in 1988, with a final project on algorithms for the generation of images. - In the following years, he was divided between the artistic activity, the development of multimedia artifacts and the university teaching at the Politecnico di Milano and at the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera, where he currently teaches Computer Graphics. - He recently resumed the artistic research activity starting from the conversion of the first works that are no longer executable on current computers and mobile devices. - Since the 1980s his work has been animated by the interest in the dynamics of human perception through the use of creative coding. By devising its own processes for generating dynamic visual configurations, he investigates the mechanisms of perception from aesthetics to the artificial life in digital artifacts, through which it is possible to understand some of our prejudices in the relationships with natural life forms.
