About The Artwork

Inspired by the creation account in Genesis 1:1-2:4. The title Ex Nihilo is latin for “out of nothing” this word for creation is unique to God’s creating the universe and everything in it out of nothing. This large 3D painting contains many symbolic details. For example each square are 12 x 12 each representing a full 24 day in the days of creation. The background is a solid matt black representing the nothingness prior to creation, it is also textured representing the “darkness so thick you can feel it”. Day seventh day represents the “rest” from creation therefore it is represented here by a cut out section behind it is a reflective surface so that someone looking in would see their own reflection, symbolically because we are created in His image. Process: Each day was created by combining digital manipulation of images created in that day, layered with scans of hand-painted spatters. The final images was then printed onto high quality canvas, vacuum adhered onto wood panels then I added texture with medium paste and acrylic beads. Each square is attacked floating onto the back panel.

For years, I lived with the notion that being an artist was just a fanciful dream, discouraged by letters of rejection the said, “We like your work, it is just not what we’re looking for right now,” led me to trade my paints for a mouse and ventured into the commercial art world. A few years ago, I taught a drawing class and that’s when I realized that the dream was dormant but not dead. I shook off the old dusty brushes and rekindled the flame. Encouraged by my son and close friends, I returned to art school to refine my skills, gain momentum and renew my confidence. I’m delighted to say those dreams are now a reality. My inspiration comes from my faith in God and the Bible. From abstract to realism, I allow the vision to dictate the medium and style, not the other way around. My personal convictions guide my hand. I paint because I find joy in it and others are encouraged by it. Although the inspiration comes from my personal faith the topics are universal: joy, pain, encouragement, fear, hope. Art purchased simply for decor, will ultimately become invisible. Art that truly inspires or moistens the eyes is reserved for the museum. My desire? is that my work is not just about a pretty picture for a wall, but more about provoking an experience the viewer has in their heart, which causes them to bring an image home that will never “disappear” into the wallpaper.
