About The Artwork

Every living organism is made up of cells, which is the primary unit of creation and life. My work explores this aspect of the micro core that makes up the whole and the metaphysical aspects that are linked to the core. I am interested in the fact that our cells are not only made up of nuclei and cytoplasm, but also serve as storage units for feelings and memories in the form of energy. Through a process of abstract mark making and digital media, I investigate these aspects of cellular structures and patterns that are interwoven with emotions, thus exploring emotions on a cellular level. Through my work I try to convey various emotions and states of being, making reference to cellular structure; allowing one to inform the other, which dictates the process of creation.

Fatima is 33 years of age, born in Pretoria, South Africa where she attended school at Crawford College. She is now based in Johannesburg, where she studying at Level 5 of a BA Fine Art through the the Interactive Design Institute and The University of Hertfordshire. Fatima is a multi-disciplinary artist who works mainly in 2D media, which includes: painting, drawing, photography, print and video art. Her work is strongly inspired by nature and aspects of, personal versus cultural identity, which she explores through mark making and the discovery of various versions of abstraction. I am a multi disciplinary artist who works mainly in 2-D media, ranging from painting and drawing, to video and digital art. My work is predominantly abstract in nature and inspired by strong concepts and ideas related to the question of how do I, successfully express my thoughts, feelings and ideas on a visual platform. I tend to push the boundaries between abstraction and realism, investigating where one ends and the other begins. The nature of my work evolves with each theme, and this sets the tone of the relationship between abstraction and realism. My processes of working are mainly inspired by abstract expressionism, where much of the work is developed through instinct and experimentation. I also consider layering and diversity to be important elements in the working process, which is why I tend to combine digital media with painting and drawing, and often allow one medium to inform the other. My work is not bound to one particular process or technique, but rather the theme or concept of the work, informs the choice of material and process. As a result, my practice tends to be quite diverse, where the process of experimentation is integral to the development of a body of work. It is through experimenting with various combinations of media that enables the work to evolve into maturity. My practice is informed, predominantly by nature and the exploration of my emerging and evolving identity. This is explored through mark making and the creative process, where the emphasis is as much on the process as on the outcome. This could also be translated into the concept of “my environment”, on a physical and meta-physical level however, it is ever-changing and evolving. I am driven by ideas of diversity and perceptions of seeing, looking at alternative ways of interpreting and projecting ideas that become unique to individual identities.
