Mixed Media, Digital on Paper

Madeline is a fictional portrait of a women who was created using digital processes. My research involves digital processes, investigating substrates and printing processes. Often, I work back into the archival prints with traditional, analog media. I do not make editions or runs of the same image - only versions using different substrates (paper, aluminum, polymer, silk, and video.) I am inspired by beauty, challenged by technology and motivated by sentience.

Nancy Jo Ward is an award-winning American media artist who lives and works in Santa Maria, CA. Ward was born in 1957 in Dayton, OH. She graduated from the School of Visual arts, New York, NY in 1980 and received her MFA in Fine Art Digital with Distinction from the University of Arts London, Camberwell College, UK in 2018. Through innovation, experimentation, hybridization of forms, and techniques that mix past and present, that contaminate the contemporary with tradition, Nancy Jo Ward creates unique and stylistically sophisticated work. Her practice embraces a range of mediums, both digital and analog, used to explore the aesthetics of post-internet culture in the pursuit of an engagement with various media. Purely figurative, her art is the result of decontextualized digital images, combined and reconstructed under the impulses of creativity, directed by personal narratives and mathematically determined through artificial intelligence and algorithms. Nancy Jo’s sensibilities as a designer continue to be evident through references to graffiti, current events, and pop culture. For over two decades, she has created fictional portraits using various methods to paint, mix, and manipulate. These investigations have led to unpredictable discoveries as she explores the edges of beauty. Wards’ physical works are printed with archival inks onto aluminum, archival paper, and crystalline coated polymer and are typically hand-finished with analog media. She continues to experiment with Augmented Reality and Experimental Video.
