New Media: Digital, Manipulated on Paper.
The title is from Somerset Maugham’s incredibly complex and somewhat autobiographical novel of the same name about the central character named Phillip Carey. I used the image of the blindfolded figure to represent the kind of blindness to reality that for many of us, is an all too real experience. In Phillip’s case, he is blind in the way that only love and the thirst for it, can render us blind.
The figure is marked by and surrounded by the darkness of his own thoughts and unfortunate life experiences which have created his unhappy an untethered reality.Nevertheless he has glimpses of a more satisfying and desirable existence, which I represented through the colorful motifs in his blindfold.
The finished work is 24” x 30” in size and printed on 100% cotton rag Hahnemuhle Archival Fine Art paper. It is issued as a framed and matted print in a Limited Edition of 5. prints. After framing, the total size of the piece is increased to approximately 33” x 40.”
The print is mounted on white archival matting and framed with clear premium acrylic instead of glass. Acrylic is 50% lighter than glass and also has a higher optical quality, and unlike glass it is shatterproof so can easily be shipped without worry of breakage. Acrylic is UV light resistant, so the work is well protected. All of the framing materials have been carefully chosen to compliment and enhance the finished print, so as to provide a cohesive and unique original work of art. The framing is finished with a simple contemporary black wood frame with all the necessary hardware attached, to hang right out of the box. Please note that because of the production time needed, prints will be shipped in 5-7 days after your order is received.
