There is a magical and mystical nirvana in every land where rocks, trees and water intersect and intertwine. ‘Up The Creek’ is a collection of artworks that attempts to create that place. And is an invitation for the viewer to be mesmerised by it too. This project draws inspiration almost exclusively from the incredible and simple nature that surrounds my daily life. It's not until you join the landscape and become one with it, that the breadth and beauty of colour, texture, shape and uniqueness truly reveals itself. That you begin to take notice of quirky and painstakingly detailed post boxes, bore water windmills in varying states of disrepair, rusty immobile paddock sculptures, perfectly symmetrical hay bales, indisputably Australian farm gates, and the disappearing tail ends of near miss wombats. And so it became necessary to combine those macro close up colours of flora and fauna, and the shape and form created by that distantly observed working landscape, with the imagination of the unknown, to truly represent the depth of beauty that the Australian countryside offers.
I want to experience the outstanding natural beauty of the Australian bush always with new eyes. With its deserved intrigue and awe.
To always feel nervous excitement at the invisible rustle and thud of startled kangaroos.
To invite the piercing, yet strangely comforting white noise of cicadas, and immerse myself for just a few indulgent moments in their impenetrable wall of sound.
And to become a Jedi master of the ongoing bush walk roulette of stick or snake.
These are just a few of the imaginary characters I've encountered so far on my travels through this magnificent countryside.
