About The Artwork

"The last time I breathed under water, I thought I'd found the meaning of love". Loosely inspired by Iwao Hakamada who spent 46 years on death row, it is more of the metaphorical psychology of feeling completely alone and wanting the be loved. This piece is a manipulated still photograph from one of my art collage videos for the song 'Dive Down'. Printed by giclée on museum paper the limited edition pieces are number and signed on the bottom border in silver ink. It can also be printed in other sizes until 5 are made.

Karen Nielsen is a multimedia artist and writer living and working in New York City. Known for her experimental electronic music and the vibrant video art installations she creates for live performances. Unlike most photo artists who use only static images, Nielsen transforms moving-images to create multilayered, vividly colored visual works that blur the line between abstraction and figuration, surrealism and realism. Like her music the result is a body of richly-hued layers that require multiple inspections to absorb and confront all there is to see and hear. Thematically Karen's creative work focuses on how we express, perceive and exploit masculine and feminine sexuality in pop culture in all its layers. She grew up at a time when gender roles were socially defined via the patriarchy. Her work focuses on gender, identity and the disparity of the sexes. Her work also exposes the fallout and moral injuries at the hands of branded America; sexism, racism, and the plight of the earth. All of her inspirations come from our popular culture. Nielsen's visual work has been exhibited at Pop International Galleries, The Watermill Center, NY Fashion Week, among others. They are also part of countless private collections. In 2018 she was designated as one of SpoiledNYC's "rising star artists”. Karen Nielsen's albums have topped the college music charts and she has had sellout performances in NYC. Karen received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Theatre from Marymount Manhattan College in NYC. She went on to medical school at Michigan State University and is also a practicing physician in NYC. In many ways, her seemingly disparate career in medicine is intertwined and serves as a source of support and inspiration for her creative work.
