I travel the Southwestern parts of the United States and am often inspired by the native art, ancient petroglyphs and cultures. I Was inspired to create this piece for my love of this particular Southwestern Icon - Kokopelli - and the folklore that surrounds it. Fertility is the main essence regarding Kokopelli and there are various story's pertaining to this, some not so family oriented but none the less interesting. Supposedly, in some cases, Kokopelli is holding something which is not a flute but is quite long and large - ergo fertility - but I chose the family approach. I used Sharpies, colored pencils and crayons to draw the original pieces of this. I then placed them in my computer and enhanced and colored them. Layered them onto a fabric design I had created using Kokopelli in repeat, then added dimension with shadowing.
The inner designs are also based on southwestern pottery design and Polynesian fabric patterns. The piece comes signed on the back with a certificate of authenticity included and a finished black backing with hanging hooks already in place,.

I've been doodling since I was 2 years old. My first grade teacher sent me home with a note that read "John needs to stop doodling and pay attention in class" The words "stop doodling" were underlined so hard that it ripped the paper that this note was on! I have this note framed and hanging in my studio. Southern California artist John A.
