Search and Traditions" contest 2011. Sasha Souther – sound artist, who works in the Experimental music genre. Her series are made of household sounds, noises with inclusions of musical instruments. Concept: “Radio Binomials” is a book project which became a starting point for the creation of electro-acoustic impressions. It is based on a series of graphic works made on aged archive paper. It was important for the authors that all elements of the book were closely intertwined with each other. For this reason an onlooker can see the original image, hear it, contemplate the sound from a different angle, read the sighted, touch it… In such a way, the authors attained the circulation effect: interrelation of audio-visual-tactile processes in the Artist’s Book genre. The object simulates an audio album – a box with a CD in it. Inside this box you can find a CD with an audio-visual footage and a so-called “screen fold book” construction, in which page by page all possible forms of the album's “tracks” are demonstrated (original image; audiogram, which illustrates the image; digital code of the audio, which illustrates the original image). BINOMIALS Images: Valery Korchagin Binomials' origin is connected with the ancient apocalyptical tradition. Demon forces possess dual nature in different religions and convictions. Sacral linguistics finds demon binomial of Yadzhudzh and Madzhudzh, and also solar binomial of Atash-Dud and Ali-Lal in Qur'anic tradition. Gog and Magog are known from the Old Testament, Yadud and Madud from Buddhism. Chudo-Udo and Sivka-Burka can be encountered in the Slavic pagan mythology. Soviet demon mythology gave us canonical Lenin-Stalin, People-Party. It also included folk Pull-Push as a symbol of an impossible operation, and Malchish-Kibalchish – utopian reality fighter, rebellious demon. New reality gave binomial demon roles to Coca-Cola and NEFTGAS. The first one is a symbolic globalization substrate. The second one is an underground genie of contemporary energy which subjugates its releaser. This series of graphic work offers the existence of alternative binomials which do not belong to any demonology listed above. They are pure action demons which possess the power of a simple sign, binomials of unmotivated situations. Tagorga-Matagorga, Makhrom and Pompona, Master and Housewife, Shurik and Sharik, and etc. are among them. RADIO Sound: Sasha Souther Radio is a form of wireless communications strongly associated with the noise during the tuning of this or that radio station. Taking this into consideration, one can conclude that the tone adjustment of a musical instrument, presence of abnormal noises in an audio recording, as well as disturbance in TV or video images implicates the “radio effect”. For example, fine-tuning of a piano is very close to the monotonous process of the “clear” sound search during the ritual of a radio program “hunting”. The main task of the radio is to enrobe into a sound cloth something you can not see as a text or an image. Sound broadcasting in the quality of a “wave” cannot be seen by a human eye. Thanks to the technical progress it has become possible to graphically record the sound of a wireless set, as well as to decode this phenomenon digitally. EP “Radio” is an audio research of artist’s graphic works with the described above phenomenon effect. The images stylized as old photographs with calendar cuts, partial peel off, flares, losses of the emulsion coating acquire the signal carrier form endowed with “noises” of such a kind.
