About The Artwork

Like every aspiring artist who loves Post Impressionism for its subject matter, vibrant colour and the freedom from tradition it represents, I looked to Van Gogh for inspiration. I was young, I was impressionable and he seemed to be the hero of misunderstood artists everywhere. Much later I found out he was much more human than the Don McLean song, Starry Starry Night, would have you believe. He may have been a tortured genius who was too good for this world but he was also an alcoholic who turned violent when he was drinking; his personal hygiene was appalling; and he had an untreated STD which he happily spread around. So it set me thinking about how to make this godlike figure more accessible and oddly more vulnerable. Portraying him as a gorilla kind of made sense. So here is Vincent Van Gorilla, surrounded by some of the images which made him famous, looking suitably misunderstood.

I am a post punk pop artist working predominantly in conte and charcoal on paper or cardboard as well as playing around endlessly with my images on my ipad using Sketchbook Pro. Occasionally I stray into painting and ceramics and am about to embark on learning screen printing and woodcuts. I live in the bayside village of Mornington, Australia with my husband, cats and multiple visiting lorikeets. My son has qualified as a doctor, so has finally left home, leaving me free to invest in my artwork at last. I work out of a converted factory space called Artspace8, which I share with graphic designers, painters, a ceramicist and a textile designer.
