Wildness: Wild Flowers At Bayport Park is a Hybrid VR Painting. Hybrid VR Paintings are physical paintings that may be enjoyed as AR/VR experiences. The painting can be experienced as a 360° panoramic experience on cellular devices, touchscreen monitors, Smart TVs, Google Cardboard, and other devices. This painting is part of the collection Resilient Americana at: http://resilientamericana.com. This painting (and the text below) was featured in a regular AR/VR feature in the Hernando Sun Times. I hope to make a book of this series of paintings. The intent of “Wildness: Wild Flowers At Bayport Park” is to be a contemplation piece on the virtue of wildness as part of the American character. This sentiment is expressed in my planned forthcoming book on American or Florida virtues: “Thriving in spite of the year’s difficulties, these swimmers at Bayport Park—rising from the water’s edge like wild flowers—are a reminder of the resilience of American wildness. Wildness is there in our love for nature. It resides even in our green suburban lawns. It is as if we are reaching out into nature, and surrounding ourselves with it, saying, “This greenery is part of me, part of my world.” All across America, homebuyers surround themselves with a little cosmos of greenery. “This, I am.” Wildness, I hope to suggest, is foundational to the development of the American worldview, feeling tone, and aesthetic. If we look at the visual arts, for example, American painting doesn’t develop a character uniquely its own until the Hudson River School painters portrayed the wildness of the American landscape. In these 19th century paintings, one feels an expansive sense of awe at the raw power of untamed nature. It is nature touched and felt both within and without. For Americans, “home” has long been on the edge of wild frontiers, and so we may take for granted the wildness of the forest of Cooper’s The Last of the Mohicans; the woods in Hawthorn’s Young Goodman Brown; the sea of Melville’s Moby Dick; the tundra of London’s The Call of the Wild. It is as if we are, in our spirit and sense of character, perpetually on the edge of a natural wildness that is both our interiority, as in Whitman’s Leaves of Grass, and our natural virtuousness expressed outwardly, as in the tradition of Natural Law, from Aristotle to Aquinas to Lock to Jefferson; the Declaration of Independence assuming its authority from “the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God”. Natural law is also the precedent for Lincoln’s arguments against slavery in the Lincoln-Douglas debates as well as being the foundation for Dr. Martin Luther King’s civil disobedience. Our deep nature—as untrammeled as wild flowers sprouting from the tropical shore on a sunny day—is, according to this tradition of thought, the foundation for, not only our human reason, but for all of our virtues and graces.” I painted this in Brooksville, Florida during the COVID-19 quarantine. Purchasing “Wildness: Wild Flowers At Bayport Park” you receive: • the acrylic painting on canvas; • jpg, mp4, and online host-able app files; • certificate of authenticity; • access to hosted site on davealber.com; • instruction manual describing how to view the painting on cellphone, tablet, Smart TV, touch screen monitor, or other devices; • and access to stereoscopic apps when they become available. (My plan is to upload all of the files in this gallery as a stereoscopic app ASAP.) After you’ve displayed your Hybrid VR Painting on different devices, chat with me. I’d love to hear from you and learn what formats you would like to see your painting made available for. Dave Alber retains the copyright of the art.
