About The Artwork

The Creatures of Prometheus is a ballet composed in 1801 by Ludwig van Beethoven following the libretto of Salvatore Viganò. The ballet premiered in Vienna is Beethoven’s only full length ballet. In Greek mythology, Prometheus is a Titan and culture hero credited with the creation of humanity from clay, who defies the gods by stealing fire and giving it to humanity as civilisation. He is known for his intelligence and as a champion of humankind, and also seen as the author of the human arts and sciences generally.
