About The Artwork
A series of ink paintings, each sized 44 x 27 cm on a sheet of 48 x 36 cm bamboo paper. These paintings are paradigmical, in the sense that their premises and composition depends to a large degree upon decisions made by reference to a series of digits of the number pi in hexadecimal formulations. Each painting is made up of 8 stripes of dilluted india ink, painted in various directions across the image area. In this series the direction of each stripe and its location are determined by pi. The ink is mixed with water to make each layer transparent, thus making the resulting image visibly multilayered as the ink builds up.

In his paintings, he creates a nuanced physical atmosphere out of the juxtaposition of overlays of colour fields, organised according to a particular system. He also specializes in alternative photographic techniques, handcrafting images using nineteenth-century techniques, and creating images of unsurpassed tactile quality. Hlynur's work is represented in major public collections in Iceland, at the Reykjavík Municipal Art Museum, and the National Gallery of Iceland.
