About The Artwork

EDEN-the current exhibition of Marc Schmitz combines various and wide-ranging works of his art. His most recent paintings, two knotted objects in conjunction with a wall clock and wall art made of neon letters materialize fictive metaphors in space which functions as a projection screen in this context. In doing so the title appears not so much to be programmatic but to denote the point of departure of western culture. By employing different media and their materiality the artist manages to elude typical fields of tension in modern art in an almost playful tone. In being completely void of narrative elements and by presenting the temporal references of its products in a concise and fragile manner, while defenselessly fending off conventional meaning, his paintings in particular reveal balance as an all-over reference of his oeuvre. As a manifestation of spatial interconnectedness Objekt N°5 (Baku 2009), a space-filling, funnel-shaped structure made of massive grey and yellow nylon ropes, appears to be floating and transparent at the same time. With Objekt N°5 the project Spaces is presented in Europe for the first time. Its aim is to introduce the spatial reticulation at the intersection of Arab culture as a contemporary verbalization of the meaningfulness of the arabesque. In its industrial adaptation the arabesque contrasts the knotted objects made of camel hair, rubber, pearls and rhinestone significantly. Being spread out on the floor and with their interspersed materiality these artifacts establish a pristine reference to the Central Asian context of Spaces. With EDEN the Galerie Kai Hilgemann offers an interesting and tantalizing panorama of Marc Schmitz more recent works. http://www.tagesspiegel.de/kultur/perlen-aus-kamelhaar/3990400.html
