About The Artwork

THE DANGEROUS MONKEY / A DANGEROUS MONKEY: The World Went Bananas # * First work of the series "A DANGEROUS MONKEY", "The World Went Bananas # 1" fell like a glove (or mask) in this moment that we live. I would like to make some observations about the composition of the work, starting with the red telephone, also known as the famous emergency telephone (a.k.a. "hotline") that connected Washington to Moscow during the Cold War. Although this phone never really existed (other means existed), it was popularized by films such as "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb" (1964) by Stanley Kubrick, a comedy about the war between the two powers. Yes, there is indeed emergency communication between the two countries with the greatest atomic arsenal of mankind to (try) to prevent worse things from happening. It would have been used for the first time in 1963, in the Cuban Missile Crisis, which almost caused a nuclear war. More recently, then US President Barack Obama used it to warn Vladimir Putin not to try to interfere in the US elections through hackers. In any case, the idea became popular that the red telephone was the last resort to prevent a worldwide disaster caused by ourselves. Obviously we got the figure of the banana, instead of the phone, which is off the hook. You will notice that the figure of the banana will permeate a large number of works in this series. The connotation that bananas receive is comical. Perhaps it is the most artistically explored fruit, from Andy Warhol to artists who can't see anything other than the penis shape (wow, how creative ...), they've always been around. And as it could not be otherwise, the last Art Basel of 2019 marked the height of the use of bananas to symbolize - who knows - the bana (in) the end of things. #MaurizioCattelan, the "artist" (debatable by many), has immortalized, whether like it or not, the $ 120k banana with silver tape. And it wasn't just one, it was an edition of three (!). While many in the art world were disgusted, the fact is that it has become a landmark of modern art/contemporary art. Even if Cattelan was unpretentious in this "work", the symbolism that the sale of this, even more for this exorbitant value, marked its place in the history and in the mockery of the irrationality of the art market. Just like a T-shirt with Che Guevara's face, the banana with silver tape makes fun of those who seek to see the Emperor's new clothes in it. The composition, with the phone being fixed by the tape and the banana on the hook complement each other in a way that leaves the viewer intrigued, no matter how much he doesn't know what all I said above is about. After all, like every human being, we are prone to making connections with colors and utilities of objects all the time. Meanwhile, in the background the world burns. And the ashes delicately fall in a poetic spectacle about the apocalypse. Just behold. Life goes on, with us or not. * CARRAZEDO, Eric * Oil on canvas, 130x90cm - 2020 * FOLLOW ME ON INSTAGRAM: @CarrazedoArt
