This painting shows an orchard and a distant village near the town of Kozan, in southern Turkey. It's about an hour's drive from where I live, and the orchard pictured is next to one owned by a close friend. I used big brushes and thick, juicy paint to give an impression of both the atmosphere and the scene. I paint both landscape and abstract works. My landscapes usually begin as small sketches made on the spot, along with photographic reference. Several sketches or photos are often used as the source material for one finished painting. Only deep-edge canvas and artist’s quality lightfast colours have been used to create the work. The canvas is painted on the sides and ready to hang unframed, although it can also be framed if desired. It is protected by a two-coat acrylic varnish. *READY TO HANG* Copyright Alexander Raynham © 2016. All rights reserved.

Turkey
I am an artist and writer with paintings in private and corporate collections in Turkey, the UK, the United States, Canada and Australia. I live in Adana, Turkey. I am a member of both local and national jury-selected artists' associations and often participate in Turkish-government sponsored exhibitions in other countries. I paint in both figurative and abstract styles, but most recently my interest has been in capturing the kind of details in nature that you would usually pass by without a second glance: things like weathered rocks, broken branches and dying leaves. The idea behind this 'Vanitas' series is perhaps that the value and beauty of the ordinary things in nature lies in their impermanence. Many of my works are built up of multiple layers over a long period of time − using a variety of techniques and tools. Layers of paint are poured, glazed, scratched, and rubbed away until the desired effect is achieved. Each exhibition I take part in brings me into contact with many artists and art lovers, whose feedback and reactions to my work I find invaluable. I continue to develop new techniques and explore new approaches in order to develop my personal response to the world around me.
