About The Artwork

This is a large scale abstract painting that I created in my Lowell, MA studio in the first half of 2018. The painting was composed in acrylic, paint marker, and sharpie on un-primed, loose canvas which I stretched over gallery depth premium stretcher bars after the painting had dried. I use a lot of poured paint, and painting on loose canvas allows puddles of pouring medium to form in more interesting ways than it does on stretched canvas, where it tends to all pool in the middle. Painting on loose canvas is also quite liberating, because the only investment is in a bolt of fabric and whatever paints go onto it. The hard work of stretching and the cost of the stretcher bars come after, and if a painting is no good you can just roll it up. This allows me to be more free in my experimentation and more honest in my expression. My work is meant to be a sort of non-linear meditative poem in color. It's not really about anything except what it's like to be a thinking being in a reality that can at times not make a lot of sense.
