About The Artwork

Of Sharpedo fangs, for luck Magical cones Faux fungi frills And starry trails A garden song • Beyond our vision and our perception bias there are worlds that operate on rules different than our own. There are light waves that our eyes can't perceive and sounds that our ears can't hear and yet there they are operating alongside our own universe, ticking at their own pace and rhythm. My Alien Landscapes bring together similar alien ecosystems of biomorphic elements and inorganic forms cohesively into a state of terraria imitating clusters. The artworks are an agglomerate of elements from the natural world and the world of fiction This series explores our age of mutating ecosystems. Of the ever increasing noise and the constant friction between rigid systems that fray at the edges, often making way for more vibrant, flexible, inclusive systems, metamorphosing and morphing into lush bio diverse ecosystems of plankton, plastic, Pan’s labyrinth and jelly beans. Of micro plastics in our blood streams swimming alongside what may have been the last sigh of a stegosaurus as it watched fire fall from the sky, the thinning of the veil between the real & the surreal. Akin to a tealeaf reader, I want the viewer to explore these works, mapping splatters, drips and an entanglement of lines and biomorphic clusters, and be witness to a lush lateral view which allows for new possibilities and magic. • A Garden Song , AlienLandscapes, 2021 |14×18 in • mixed media (Acrylic + Ink + Collage ) on gallery wrapped canvas

Asma Kazi is a multidisciplinary artist currently based in India. She has professionally worked as an artist since 2012, and has been commissioned to work on various fine art and commercial art projects in this time. Her artwork currently resides with collectors around the world, including Sheikha Nawar Al Qassimi of the Sharjah Art Foundation, and has been exhibited in India and the US. Some of her commercial art projects include artwork created for Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Hachette Books, Zee TV and Hoshruba Repertory. Before 2012 her curriculum vitae did not include art, and mainly read - CRMS, Zoology, Business Strategy, Real Estate, and Analytics. Asma has a BSc In Zoology, a diploma in software engineering, and a MBA in marketing. She has a Six Sigma green belt certification, and worked at the Analytics Centre Of Excellence while at GE card services, Bangalore. She has also worked on Tenant Strategies & Solutions while at Cushman & Wakefield, Bombay. Asma’s mode of expression in her constantly evolving work swings from abstract expressionism, sculptural mixed media works, fantastical figurative themes, to pop art, and repetitive illustrative patterns. Her work has a touch of whimsy, is hyperactive, and brings together seemingly abstract elements in a state of cohesiveness. She sometimes draws her inspiration from imaginary biomorphic forms, and the other times from dwelling in the abstract of alien landscapes and the chaos theory. The extensive use of textures and repeating patterns in her work, are like a glitch, like patina, giving multidimensionality to the art. The repetitions are sometimes calming, quirky & playful the other times, always giving a sense of order in the chaos. Some of her artworks seem to have grown complex personalities of their own, evolving year after year, as she adds new detail to it, creating a new story over a story, resulting in art that is rich with emotion and texture. Asma’s work is evocative, sometimes playful, influenced by tales from her childhood, time spent in Zoology class and inspirations drawn from following the breadcrumb trail of the everyday. It is a celebration of the ever evolving, and ever enchanted in life, alongside beautiful dilapidation.
