About The Artwork

I seek out the neglected and overlooked. Outdated bus tickets, kids drawings and handwritten lists are some of the everyday ephemera that influence the imagery which meet scissors and random acts of chance. The work plays out innovative acts of ordering and reactivating of the the anonymous and ubiquitous things we meet and part company with on a daily basis. The instantaneous, forever changing and obsolete are held momentarily in a creative balancing act that wrestles clarification and creative destruction. New sensations ebb and flow, both in and outside the physical space that is the canvas; shape to colour, form to pattern, combining a bold sensitivity to raw ephemera in which to revisit our world. The viewer takes part in a handcrafted spree, a heavy contrast to todays slick visual culture.

Human habits and social behaviour inform an improvised process which combines collage, painting, and installation, sometimes of a public nature and not limited to the environment of a gallery. Carnivals, makeshift shrines, allotment gardens, protest signage and handwritten notes are some of the found forms of expression which intrigue and stimulate my arts practice. I’m interested in the cultural artefacts and experiences that are created for celebration, mourning, demonstration, worship or survival which allow us, for a brief moment, to journey psychologically within the joy, sadness, meditation and belief, and freedom or dependence of our fellow beings. JOANNE HUMMEL NEWELL ( b.1982 UK) trained at the Royal College of Art London and was hailed as ‘the next generation to turn its back on Emin and Hirst’s conceptual works’ by the Observer.
