About The Artwork

This artwork was created for an exhibition titled Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder, which was exhibited in two gallery locations in New Brunswick, Canada. I chose an absence of color to mark the loss of the familiar I have experienced over the past decade of living internationally. The bittersweet reality of losing a sense of home continues to play a role in my life. Ultimately, I have come to realize the only home I will have is the one I create for myself. This painting is not intended to represent any image or thing. The title was chosen to convey a feeling of loneliness, as in being away from home. The diptych painting was created with an ink wash background. In the foreground, there are many repetitive paint blobs made using black and white acrylic paint pressed into organic shapes. When the pressing motion is released, a feathered effect is created that evokes motion. An accent of colorful embroidery is applied throughout the composition, which creates a strike contrast to the darkness of the background. The effect is beautiful and organic. The edges of this canvas are a bright titanium white. The two canvases are 24x24" each, resulting in a total dimension of 24x48" when combined.
