Painting: Oil on Canvas.
I start my paintings with layers of handwriting, taken from my personal journals to create an underpainting of tangled memories. I respond to the mark-making created by the layers of hand-writing to create an elastic, mobile space for my figures to inhabit. In Absolution, I wanted to convey the idea of feeling cleansed/absolved of all things when one dives into the water and so I chose to paint over all of the underwriting. However, the underwriting was done with thick paint so that the marks, the texture of the writing is still visible under the surface, absolved but still there.
