Achilles Wounded 2.0 (36x36). 2018. Michael painted this same painting-which he calls Achilles Wounded 1.0-back in 2015. The 2015 painting was done in black and white. At that time, Michael was battling with depression and wanted to paint a work of art that reflected a Soldier that was strong, but nonetheless, hurting. Much has changed in Michael’s life from 2015 to 2018 and that’s the reason he painted Achilles again-this time using gold. It was important to paint this piece to symbolize that Achilles is older, wiser, and knows that he can harness power from the sun. Old wounds have healed, and new wounds are inevitable, but Achilles accepts this fate and does not let any of that shake him. “Remember how we used to feel before we were made from steel.”

Michael Novotny expresses himself through visual art to seek balance, project emotion, spread positive energy, and fill his soul. He is compelled to create works of art to keep balance and perspective in his life. These works are all a reflection of life as he sees it. Much of it is centered on illumination, love, compassion, courage, wisdom, and resilience. He often uses gold in his paintings as a symbolic way to reinforce those themes. His goal is not to sell a single painting, rather an emotion that others can relate to.
