ADVENTURE CALLS IDEAS is from the series HERE AND WHEN. The goops and scratches and washes make this piece especially intriguing. In harmony with the textures is the idea that there is such an interesting process of emotions that occur when formulating ideas. There is the vast space of thinking and feeling that something is stirring yet, I'm not sure yet "what" is stirring. Then, the very brief few seconds it happens - an idea is born. How it goes from there is so dependent on the importance, intention, development...the process can be ended or endless.... is as individual as our DNA. This series, HERE AND WHEN for me, is connected to and emotionally drawn from horizons maybe found in landscapes. (Here) Or times of expression and emotion. (When). This series of paintings often include a prominently placed rectangle or square. I am often asked why I choose to add these. The answer is different for each painting. For one painting it may be a source of reflection. For another painting it may be a place of rest or a portal to enter. And there is no correct answer. Because what is more important to me is what the viewer finds the rectangle or square to be. That’s true of my entire compositions. The process is for me, the finished piece is for the beholder.

Kathryn Fortson has exhibited in group and solo shows throughout the Southeastern U.S. Her paintings and prints are held in private, corporate, and public collections world wide. "For me, abstract painting begins by connecting to a state of being or maybe connecting to an emotion. Sometimes being an object or element in nature. To be a shell … or to be a blade of grass in the wind. And, if not a tangible thing, I often connect to states of being. Can emotion form motion? Would it form line, depth shadows, movement ….how might laughter play with colors and light? When I am painting, I don't really think about what brush to pick up or color to mix. It is as though my connected state and my painting skills have their own dance. It is a little bit meditative, a little bit of disassociation and a lot of surrendering. I hope my work can evoke curiosity and perhaps encourage a different outlook or perspective. Maybe nudge the viewer to bypass one's typical interpretations and open to the intangible energy an art piece may offer. Kathryn Fortson's studio is in Alpharetta, Georgia USA. She accepts commissions.
