Art Description

Painting: Digital, Acrylic, Oil, Spray Paint, Ink on Canvas.

Acrylic, acrylic based medium, archival varnish UV protection, oil, lacquer, and pigmented Ultrachrome K3 inkjet prints (collage) on canvas

The basis of the artwork is an over-painted auction advertisement of Andy Warhol's »Liz«. The over-painted printed matter has been digitalized and reworked on the computer. Parts of it have been printed out and mounted on canvas with a special kind of transparent archival varnish UV protection, which seals the print, and mixed with acrylics, create glazes in various sheens. The over-painting serves as an under-painting that loops continuously behind expressionist brushwork. Unlike on the computer, where the functional logic is based on described rules, the material on canvas becomes the topic as a sequence of actions—taking on an almost sculptural character. The result is a multilayered composition in which figure and ground seem to continually shift between the analog painting, and its digital counterpart. This method is predicated upon the crossover of painting, printing and collage, and draws it actuality from the collision between the visual codes of mass media and the subjective traces of painterly expression.
