The title of this series of works comes from Aristotle’s notion that every physical object is a compound of matter and form. This doctrine has been called “hylomorphism”, a portmanteau of the Greek words for matter (hulê) and form (eidos or morphê). The works are an attempt to bring sculptural forms into the painted image using lines, forms and textures to ‘describe’ objects rather than to depict them directly. The works are unapologetically linear, focussing on slow, meditative brushstrokes and undiluted colours that emerge from the ground of the painting in pure forms. They invite the viewer to look out beyond the surface of the canvas to the world in which they inhabit reminding us that world is composed of these forms, far more than we care to admit. As humans we naturally think in logarithmic scales and instinctively understand mathematic principles lying within everything we see. The works bring us back to these basic elements of the human mind.
