About The Artwork

This developed the idea of Greek calligraphy, but also take on account my academic research on Ancient Greek Aesthetics and Art. I began with a very documented commentary on the way ancient writing worked, then it evolved as research that studied the texts and the philology that made possible to read at present times as books. I liked the idea that the page design was as different to the ancient texts, as the book is now to the ebook. As far as the selection of text I choose simply what I had near, the idea was to relate to the scrap, the fragment, the palimpsest, that is just a part of something that would never be complete again.

Born in Mexico City in 1965, Alicia Montemayor studied Art at the National School of Painting, Sculpture and Etching "La Esmeralda" and Philosophy in the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters at the National University of Mexico (UNAM). Also has taken Workshops with Roger von Gunten, Rafael Zepeda and Juan José Beltrán. In 1996 won an Honourable Mention form Vermont. MEX-AM Cultural Foundation for a two month Fellowship at the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson Vermont. Later in 1999 the Alexander Onassis Public Benefit Foundation granted her an Scholarship Category C for Postgraduate Student, that allowed her to spend three months in Greece. Deeply interested in landscape, has developed a work that mingles it with calligraphy, arriving at informal abstraction. This has been the beginning of a more complex work on text and image, taking on account the philosophical research and the plastic as one and the same. Beginning as part of a academic research on Ancient Greek Aesthetics, the compelling form of the Ancient written formats of Greek Antiquity and their philological studies has been a basis of inspiration. As a result of this study the landscape notes had been transformed in stone, papyrus or parchment and the inscription returned to its original scrapings (as the most antique definition of graphein) and has let the intermingling of literary and philosophical Greek texts as another commentary that could be found in an ancient source. Also interested in illustration has published "Innanna. Reina del Cielo y la Tierra" with the DGP of Mexico, and the cover art for "Museos en la sociedad del olvido" with the same publishing house.
